Wetsuit trauma.
Weβve all been there.
Iβm talking about the changing room in the surf shop.
Sweating, struggling and straining while trying on 6 different wetsuits, from 6 different brands. Yuck.
Why donβt you just order a custom suit instead?
Yes. You can order a custom suit. Not kidding.
You just have to plan ahead a little, but the benefits are worth it. No more weird-fitting wetsuits, and no more sweaty changing rooms.
Here are 5 reasons why custom ordering is the way to go.
1.Itβs going to fit right
This benefit alone is probably good enough for most people. A suit that fits right in the shoulders, neck, chest, and legs will keep you warmer longer, reduce rashes in those uncomfortable rash places, and make your sessions that much more enjoyable.
You can eliminate some of that shoulder burn you get from a suit that fits well in the legs but is way too tight in the shoulders.
You can eliminate that suit that fits well in the chest but you have to roll up the ankle cuffs.
You can seriously reduce the underarm rash you get from a suit that fits well everywhere but the chest.
2. Custom Thickness
Sometimes all the thickness options are available, just not in the particular brand of wetsuit that fits you best. You can eliminate that problem too.
For example, you live in a cool-water zone, like Huntington Beach. Maybe a straight 3mil is perfect for you, but youβd also like to keep the sun off your head, especially if youβre a little hair challenged, like me.
Does anyone make an all-3mil with a hood?
Nope.
I rest my case.
3. Custom colors
I know some people will laugh at this option, but a lot of us wonβt. A lot of us are bored with all-black suits. Or bored with a couple of matching pink panels on some of the womenβs suits. I, for one, want an all green suit. Why, you ask? The first suit I ever owned, when I was 10, was an all green suit made by Wilson Wetsuits in downtown Huntington. I loved that suit. At the time I was really into frogs. I even had pet frogs. When I saw that suit at Wilsonβs, I was like, sick! Frog colors! I wore that suit until it was too small and falling apart at the seams. So, memories.
4. Custom Design Features
You can get custom design features, like the 3mil with a hood I mentioned earlier. Some of the custom design features you can get:
β Entry style: Zipperless, chest zip, back zip, zip-free velcro, U Zip, and more.
β Smoothie Rubber: perfect for cold, windy locations. Cuts the wind chill down to zero.
β Fused ankle and wrist cuffs. Keeps the water out. Keeps you warmer.
β Choose your seam construction. Triple glued, blind-stitched, taped (all three!), or just straight stitching if you spend your time in super warm waters.
β Anti Slip Seals: keep your ankle and wrist cuffs where they belong.
β Ankle Straps: Keeps the water out when youβre going full speed.
β Aqua Slush Ankle Panels: If water gets in, it has somewhere to get out.
5. Yamamoto Rubber
If youβre like me and you need a wetsuit so you donβt get hypothermia, then Yamamoto Rubber is the way to go. Soft, flexible, durable and silly warm. Even if I didnβt live where the water temp was trying to kill me, Iβd wear Yamamoto Rubber. Nothing is as comfortable.
In conclusion
So there you have it. Some custom wetsuits can be more expensive than an off-the-rack suit, but the benefits are worth it, especially when you consider your custom suit will probably last at least twice as long. Thatβs twice as long in a suit you created that fits and keeps you warm. Itβs a no-brainer.
